Brett Cronin, 24, will be charged with murder after administering heroin to the child while the two were staying together at a house in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California.
Cronin reportedly shot himself up with the narcotic and then gave it to the child, whom went into convulsions soon after. However, paramedics were not called to the scene until the following morning, and the boy was deceased.
Police detective Dave Peteque said the boy was spending the night with a friend. Cronin was the friend's older brother.

Peteque added that no track marks were found on the boy and that officials have no reason to believe he had ever used heroin before.
"It's a horrific death," said Peteque.
