700 Club's Pat Robertson Haiti Comments: Out Of Context?
Or out of control?
We've been creeping on the search trend "Pat Robertson Haiti comments" since yesterday, but we didn't cover it because, you know, evangelist Pat Robertson's not exactly someone our readers seek out. However we wanted you to be up on this because the buzz isn't going away: Robertson's comments that the Haiti earthquake is a "blessing in disguise" has millions of people in aftershock, even days after he said it.
Pat Robertson tell his co-host that something happened a long time ago in Haiti and said, "They got together and swore a pact to the devil, they said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.' True story.'"
Robertson's co-host looks on incredulously while Robertson says the people of Haiti are cursed with "desperate poverty" because of their deal with the devil. Robertson also says the public needs to pray for the Haitian people to turn away from the devil and towards God.
While Pat Robertson has garnered criticism -- including hurt and outrage from the Haitian people -- for seemingly implying that the people of Haiti deserve the tragedy that's happened to them this week, Robertson insists that his comments were taken out of context.
