ABC's 'Obese' Takes Weight Loss to a New Level
It's a lose-lose situation.
Fans of NBC's hit show The Biggest Loser, about overweight people competing for prizes by slimming down, can soon expect an even bigger portion of weight-loss reality shows. ABC is developing it's own show, tentatively named Obese.
As opposed to other weight loss shows, Obese will focus on invidiuals who are morbidly overweight and follow them as they lose hundreds of pounds over the course of a year.
According to executive producer J.D. Roth, the new show's format will take away the competitive aspect and instead focus on truly improving the individual's life.
"This is a unique story that hasn't been told yet," said Roth. "There's something great and transformative when you take the game element out of it and just focus on one man or woman over the course of a year and there's no prize at the end. The finish is their entry into the life they've always wanted."
The show is not expected to run until late next year, so hopefully viewers won't be too full on weight loss competitions and reality shows. Still, Roth believes it will be well worth the wait.
"We want to witness the most important year of a human being's life, and that's the one where they get their life back," he said. "We can help somebody lose 50 percent of their body fat, and you'll get to see that entire 365-day journey in one hour."
