Ad Offers Waxing Discount for Girls Under 15
A few weeks back, the New York Times ran an article about how many NYC pre-teens were getting adult beauty treatments (like bikini waxes, Brazilian blow out and others) in preparation for camp. The piece in the Times rankled many parents who thought that those girls were too young to be concerning themselves with such thing. Now comes this. An ad offering a discount to promote girls' waxing?
Unbelievable.
There's definitely a new trend in young girls getting hair removal treatments lately, but offering a discount to encourage it is downright creepy.

With the focus on girls 15 and under (can you believe it?), the Uni K Wax Center is offering up the experience of a girl's "first waxing" at a discounted rate.
Get 50 percent off your daughter's first waxing! You can't beat that.
The ad reads, "Celebrate Freedom and Independence in July," adding that during the month "girls 15 and under can enjoy their FIRST waxing experience and find it NATURAL, SAFE and PLEASANT."
"Pleasant" seems like a stretch.
The salon offering the waxing service, of course, supports their controversial ad. With CEO and founder Noemi Grupenmager saying, "By the age of 11 or 12, some young girls develop hair on their legs and upper lip. This can not only be embarrassing, but it often makes these young girls targets for bullying at school, especially during PE and recess. Uni K Wax is offering a safe solution in a comfortable environment for these girls."
The 12-year-old featured in this Good Morning America piece said she gets a bikini wax before she goes to camp, with her mom saying it "wasn't an easy sell," but added, "it's important that I listen to her."

Uni K Wax does require minors age 17 and younger to have their parents sign a consent form before treatment.
