Adam Lambert: No Apologies For AMA Display
Lambert blasts "double standard" for male pop stars.
We reported early Monday on Adam Lambert's uber-sexual S&M performance at Sunday night's American Music Awards. By Monday afternoon Lambert had spoken out to comment on the judgment...and just to be clear, he's not saying sorry.
Criticism over Adam Lambert's AMA performance triggered editing for the West Coast broadcast and the following bold reaction from Lambert to Access Hollywood:
"You know honestly, if I offended some people ... it's apples and oranges. I'm not an artist that does things for every single person ... I believe in artistic freedom and expression, I believe in honoring the lyrics of a song, and those lyrics aren't really for everybody either."
He continued, "There's a big double standard, female pop artists have been doing things provocative like that for years, and the fact that I'm a male, and I'll be edited and discriminated against could be a problem."
.
Lambert went on, "People are scared and it's really sad, I just wish people could open their minds up and enjoy things, it's all for a laugh, it's really not that big of a deal."
Following Sunday night's performance where he simulated oral sex with a male dance and made out with his male keyboardist onstage, Lambert tweeted the following:
"Hope u had fun tonight! We did. All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity. :) fans: I adore u."
He then replied to Perez Hilton, saying thanks for the support and that he's looking forward to upcoming performances...although what kind of performing he'll be doing, we're not ones to predict.
