Saved by jeans?

It seems like a sort of obvious move for American Apparel. In fact, I'm quite surprised they don't already have their own denim line. But the question is, will a denim line going to be enough to save American Apparel from all the scrutiny they're going through?

I can't help but wonder if the allegations of sexual harassment against American Apparel's CEO Don Charney will harm the company that much. But the company is already in quite a bit of financial trouble. In fact, they reported a loss of $86.3 million in 2010. Basically, they need all the help they can get right now. Denim to the rescue?

In the new press release from American Apparel, they're ignoring all their troubles and focusing on their happy company news. The release states, "Jeans are an iconic, essential part of the modern wardrobe, just like the t-shirt. No one does basics like American Apparel. We've mastered the basic t-shirt, now we're getting excited about jeans." It is true. Jeans are incredibly basic and that's what American Apparel is known for. What took them so long?

The denim line was just released and it features two washes in two different styles for women, including a high-waist tapered leg jean and a high-waist cuffed jean short. They're hoping to release men's jeans and more women's styles in time for back to school.

All the jeans are retailing for $80, which seems to be a pretty mid price point when it comes to denim. Do you think people will cough up that much or would they rather go cheaper with jeans from Gap and Old Navy or more expensive with designer labels?

It will be interesting to see what becomes of American Apparel in the future... Jeans can't hurt, but I doubt they can save a rapidly dying company!
