Actors often suffer for their art, and in this case, the plum role of Fantine was worth the starvation diet Hathaway was committed to.
In the new issue of Vogue, the newlywed explains how she lost 10 pounds before shooting the film by following a strict cleanse.
Okay, that we understand, but the next 15 pounds were shed by nearly starving herself.
Hathaway described that she was in a 'state of deprivation, physical and emotional' when filming wrapped, adding, "It took me weeks till I felt like myself again."
How did Hathaway lose the weight? She credits the weight loss with two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day, telling Vogue, "I had to be obsessive about it -- the idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience -- and I don't judge it in any way -- it was definitely a little nuts."

She added, "It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."
Hathaway appears to have gained the weight back and is no worse for the wear, plus she's got a phenomenal film role to add to her resume.
