Approaching someone about their possible drinking problem is a tricky situation. More often than not they'll deny it and reproach you for accusing them of being an alcoholic.

Then, if they do appear to take it easy on the wine coolers for a week or two, they end up back on it with a vengeance. This quick swing, from hard-lining teetotaler to sloppy binge boozer, without any sign of moderation, is a tell-tale sign of alcoholism.
