Avatar: Number 2 All-Time Box Office Champion
Titanic and Avatar: a combined $3 billion.
James Cameron is poised to become the king of the movie world once again. The director's 1997 film, Titanic, is the highest grossing film of all time, and his newest spectacle, Avatar, has officially become the second.
Avatar has earned a total of $1.14 billion worldwide, pushing it past 2003's Lord of the Rings: Return of the King into second place on the box office's all-time grossing list. That equals about $375 million domestically and $760 million internationally.
The film, which follows a paralyzed ex-Marine, played by Aussie Sam Worthington, who travels to a faraway planet with his mind in the body of an alien, wasn't expected to pass LOTR until sometime next week. Needless to say, it has exceeded analyst's expectations.
Cameron's other film, Titanic, has held the top spot for over a decade now. The doomed passenger ship floated away with over $1.84 billion.
But at only 20 days old, Avatar has plenty of steam left to climb up the list of top-ten domestic earners. Who knows, it may even overtake the number one spot, and leave The Dark Knight in the dust.
