Well, first, congratulations to pop star Avril Lavigne on her new engagement to Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger.

Second, kudos to both of the music stars for keeping the romance on the down low, which is no small feat at all in this social media and celeb-obsessed world we all operate in.

The singers have been dating for just six months, People.com reports, after getting together to write a song for Lavigne's upcoming album, her fifth studio effort.

"A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together," a friend of Lavigne's tells the website.

The marriage will be the first for Kroeger, 37, and the second for Lavigne, 27, who followed her 2009 divorce from Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley with a relationship with reality TV star/Kardashian stepbrother Brody Jenner.

Lavigne was also rumored, earlier this summer, to be dating longtime friend Marilyn Manson.

Kroeger, who, like Lavigne, is Canadian, proposed to Lavigne on Aug. 8, with a 14-carat diamond ring.
