The Kentucky Derby website notes that the hats are "part Southern tradition, part spectacle," and the hat parade "is much of what makes 'The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports' one of the greatest people-watching events in the world!"
One thing's for sure, the Kentucky Derby hats don't have much to do with practicality, as much as most are simply screaming for attention.
MSNBC took a look what goes into a Derby hat, with hat maker Christine Moore discussing the horse race fashion, noting, "Hats are the derby, really. Other than horses."

Moore calls the Derby hat "the supreme thing," and shares that prices run the gamut, with some of her creations ranging between $450 and $675.
