Can Semen Cure Morning Sickness?
Surprise: Theory Is Untested
By most accounts, being pregnant sucks. For nine months you're bloated and hormonal and mysteriously addicted to hard-to-find junk food. And then there's the morning sickness. Well, one doctor says he's found a possible cure for your pregnant tummy troubles: more of your man's semen.
Gordon Gallup, a psychologist at SUNY-Albany, came up with the novel way to rid yourself of morning sickness from his research into the sexual evolution of humans.
To understand the potential benefits of extra semen ingestion and insemination, Gordon says, you need to have an idea of why women become sick from pregnancy in the first place.
Since half of a baby's DNA comes from the father, a fetus can represent a foreign organism or even an infection to a mother's body. So the nausea, vomiting and headaches -- the morning sickness -- are the mother's natural way of dealing with an intruder in her body.
The cure? Lots and lots of semen, says Gallup.
"The best cure for this type of sickness," summarizes Jezebel's Erin Gloria Ryan, "is, strangely enough, the same thing as its cause. The more exposure a woman has to her partner's semen that is to say, the more often she's inseminated prior to conception and during the early stages of the pregnancy the more tolerance her body develops to his genetic material."
Of course, Gallup's theory has yet to be put to the test. Though I'm guessing your hubby will have no problems helping out. You know, for science.
