Piggie wants you to read a book!
.

Keep it in your purse, ladies.

Now that you've ditched the glossies, we have to talk about a little somethin' somethin' that may be a little tough to swallow. On to the penny-pinching!

Tip #10: Cancel Your Cable

Ouch. I know, but what about Mad Men Season 3? What about Flight of the Conchords? It's sad, but true, that a handful of companies have price fixed you into huge monthly rates for just a few good shows that are still on the tube. So what can you do about it?

Call up and threaten to cancel
It seems strange, but if you call up your cable company and threaten to cancel, they will more than likely drop your rates to keep you around. It never hurts to ask!

Upgrade
This is also a puzzling situation: if you call up and ask for what promos they are offering, you'll hang up with a package that has more services for less money. Cable companies get more by having more subscribers, so they'll offer you a 3-6 month carrot with more perks just to stick around. But stick that deal expiration date in your calendar, because you'll need to call back and do this all over again!

Actually cancel
How many repeats of Project Runway and Law & Order can you watch, really? Didn't you promise yourself you'd workout more, read more, and hang out with your friends more around New Year's? Well, you can watch those shows just as easily at the gym (for free), at a friends house (double bonus), or not at all. Make a choice: a big fat savings account, or hours of pointless reality TV.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to re-watch the season premiere of Lost. Which I DVR'd from my huge cable package.

Another smart alternative (and trend that's really starting to hit full steam) is to get your TV content from your PC. With all of the cost-effective options out there such as Windows Media Center, Hulu, YouTube, you can easily stream this content on your PC and easily connect it to the big screen TV via an HDMI cable or Extender. It's cheap, affordable and can save you a lot of money in a budget crunch. Check out http://tvonyourpc.wordpress.com for more info and updates related to TV On Your PC trends.
