Are you penguin... or are you penguout?

Put on your best Zebra tuxedo, grab some Oreos and bring your Dalmatian. It's National Penguin Awareness Day, and it's time to celebrate and learn about the world's favorite black-and-white waddler.

You heard right. Today is the one day of the year devoted to penguins, and we might as well take advantage of the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the flippered flightless birds.

For one, did you know that not all penguins live in the cold climate of icebergs and blizzards in Antarctica? The Galapagos Penguin lives near the equator.

The world's smallest penguin is the Little Blue Penguin (aka the Fairy Penguin) which grows to just 16 inches high and weighs The world's largest penguin is the Emperor Penguin, which can grow up to 3 1/2 feet tall and weigh 75 pounds or more.

But that's nothing. There are fossilized examples of some penguins, like New Zealand's Anthropornis, that showed they used to grow to almost 6 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds. That's like Happy Feet with penguins the size of linebackers.

To learn more about penguins, read about them and impress your friends by becoming a Penguin Geek. Also, make sure to watch some live peguins at play. Check out this live webcam from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Happy Penguin Awareness Day!

It's actually National Cheese Lovers Day also. Maybe we could combine the two somehow.... cheese-covered penguins.
