Chocolate and Spam Do Well in Recession
Things are looking up.
With the recession in full swing, folks are shying away from expensive luxury items like big cars and major appliances, and spending their money instead on simpler, tastier things.
Sales of items like chocolate, running shoes, gardening seeds and Spam are up all across the country, a trend that experts believe has to do with the fact that more people want to keep things simple and at home.
According to Envirosell, a company that tracks the behavior of consumers, shoppers are drawn to products that make them feel safe, both personally and financially.
"People are much more focused on their homes and their immediate happiness and they're buying things that they can use themselves — seeds, fishing equipment. Lipstick and chocolate are small rewards that make you feel better."
Some other products that are flying off the shelves: gold coins, firearms, laxatives and condoms. Even Match.com has posted its best performance in seven years.
Because if there's one thing the world needs when the economy takes a nosedive, it's some good old-fashioned lovin'.
