It's Been Three Years Since His Pre-Grammy Party Attack on Then-Girlfriend Rihanna

It's a little surprising Chris Brown would want to associate himself with the Grammys again, but it's even more surprising that the Grammys would invite the controversial singer to perform. But, Brown is scheduled to take the stage during Sunday's telecast, the Associated Press reports.

When last the singer's name was mentioned in conjunction with the Grammys, it was in shocking news reports that he had assaulted then-girlfriend Rihanna at a pre-Grammy party in 2009.

The attack led to the couple's break up, as well as five years of probation for Brown for the felony attack.

Brown's reputation tanked after the attack, though his music career has rebounded, and he's not only performing on the show, but he's nominated for three Grammys, including Best R&B Album for "F.A.M.E. (Forgiving All My Enemies)."

The singer hasn't attended the awards in the last three years, though he was also nominated for three Grammys last year.

Meanwhile, Rihanna -- who was supposed to perform with Brown at the 2009 Grammys before the attack -- will also perform on Sunday, and is nominated for four Grammys, including Album of the Year, for "Loud."

A restraining order requires that Brown stay at least 10 yards away from Rihanna when they're both at a music industry event.

The Grammys air live on CBS Sunday from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
