Christina Ricci Stars in Donna Karan Short
Short film or long commercial?
Christina Ricci stars as four different characters in this Donna Karan short film. At least, that's what they're calling it. I would probably simply call it a long commercial, but it seems to be the next big thing for fashion designers to do these days.
The short film from Donna Karan was created in order to show off her new Eldridge bag, which is unique because it can be carried four different ways. In the film, Christina Ricci plays four different characters in order to show this. The problem is, if you don't know that's what you're watching for, you'll probably miss it all together and just stare at Christina's different hairstyles.
The film was directed by 24-year-old Jake Sumner, the son of Sting and Trudie Styler at NYC's Soho Grand Hotel. It features a four-way split screen of Christina Ricci in different personas. According to Christina, "I have been a long term devotee of Donna Karan. This was the perfect opportunity for me to work with a wonderful new director, wear amazing pieces, be in New York, and make a cool film. It was really fun."
It's not clear exactly where this short, 1 minute, 55 second film will be show, but likely only on the Internet. DKNY has also followed suit and created a short film featuring their new brightly colored sweaters.
I'm uncertain where the line between commercial and short film is, but it makes sense that high-end fashion designers would rather talk about their products in films over commercials. I have a feeling we're going to be seeing a whole lot more of these films from fashion designers in the future! And it was kind of nice to see Christina Ricci back on the scene again.
