Dakota Fanning to Star in The Runaways?
Jodie Foster 2.0?
Dakota Fanning is a touchy subject. Some of us think she was cute as a button in I Am Sam, some of us are indifferent to her blonde ways, and some of us think she looks like a rabid jackal when she smiles. But she's managed to surf through child stardom relatively unscathed and is looking to take on more meaty roles in adult films.
This time, the buzz is that she may be starring as famous rock goddess Cheri Currie in the upcoming The Runaways biopic. The movie was written, and will be directed, by Floria Sigismondi, who is best known for her work directing music videos for artists like David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, and The White Stripes.
The film will track the rise and fall of attitude-packed, all-girl, '70s rock band, The Runaways, who Cheri Currie was the lead singer for. At 15, Fanning is the same age Currie was when she performed classics like "Cherry Bomb," and "Queens of Noise," though she does lack the reputation that her prospective co-star, Kristen Stewart, who has signed on to play Joan Jett in the film, comes with.
.
Sure, they can tease up Fanning's hair, and stick her in nothing but a corset and some tall boots, but will she be able to pull off the swagger and depict the drug-fueled performances that Currie was famous for? Fanning notably proved her willingness to take her acting to the edge with Hounddog, a film which depicts the very young actress being raped.
The outrage stemming from the release of the film seemed to drive the actress back to softer films, like the stop-motion Coraline, and the sappy Secret Life of Bees. But who knows? Perhaps this tiny diva will find her way back to more serious fare by playing the addict with the rockstar roar.
