Diablo Cody to Adapt Sweet Valley High Series
The return of the Wakefield twins
This could potentially be the best news ever. Remember growing up reading the Sweet Valley High series? If you were born at in the late 70s or early 80s, you probably did. Now, Diablo Cody is taking those books to the big screen and we couldn't be more excited.
Diablo Cody is best known for her work on the amazing Juno, and most recently the more disappointing Jennifer's Body. But we can't think of anyone more perfect to write and adapt the Sweet Valley High series to the big screen than Diablo Cody.
In case you're out of the 80s teen book series loop, Sweet Valley High was a series written by Francine Pascal and chronicled the lives of identical blonde twins Jessica and Elizabeth. Though they looked exactly alike, the girls had totally different personalities- Jessica being the "pretty" one and Elizabeth being the "smart" one. They had all sorts of adventures with friends, boys, etc. throughout the series. The show actually was adapted for television in the mid-90s, but it wasn't that great.
So, why are we so excited Diablo Cody is taking on this project? Well, as you probably know from Juno, Diablo is an expert on nostalgia. We can't wait to see all the fun little 80s details included in the movie. And we think Diablo is going to stay true to the books. As she said on her Twitter account yesterday, "Frankie says relax: Sweet Valley High is set in the '80s. Don't feel like brokering some deal with T-Mobile to give Enid a Sidekick." But the Fiat will definitely be involved! And we can't wait to see who is cast for the Wakefield twins! We have a feeling Hayden Panettiere would play the perfect Jessica. Could Elizabeth be Kate Bosworth?
We can't be the only ones who want to run to the basement, dig out the entire series, and spend a weekend re-reading. Of course, we have some time since the movie hasn't even been written or cast yet. But we are just so excited our favorite twins are coming back!
