Elton John Confirms Lady Gaga as Godmother
What was all the hush-hush about?
Back in February, Elton John's partner was quick to extinguish the buzz suggeting he and Elton had chosen their close friend Lady Gaga as the Godmother for their adopted infant son. This week Elton turned around to confirm the report...so what was the big baptism controversy?
Lady Gaga was baptized Catholic as a child and attended Catholic school for most of her life. It's also clear she references God in a lot of her work ("Born This Way" is full of high-fives to the Big Man); but she also balances her position on religion with a message that promotes the inclusion of everyone.
Elton John and David Furnish have publicly applauded Lady Gaga for her support of the LGBT community ("She's all about inclusiveness and tolerance," said Furnish. "The freedom to be who you are, do what you want and love who you want to love,"); so it's no wonder they count her among their closest friends. But recently during an interview on the BBC's Radio 1, Lady Gaga refused to voice whether she'd serve a critical role in the life of Elton John's son Zachary, who was born through a surrogate in Eastern Europe at Christmas. "I don't really want to reveal anything," Gaga said. "They're going to make many lovely announcements about their beautiful son Zachary. I'm too much of a lady to talk about that on the air."
But Elton John confirmed the rumor on "SNL" last weekend: "His godmother is Lady Gaga," Elton said, as the audience didn't know whether to applaud or...what. "That is true. It's not a joke. Lady Gaga is his actual godmother, which is ironic, because I've always said that Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. And Gaga loves Mars. She says Mars has good schools and great discos.".
So if Lady Gaga's two hours of fame don't last beyond the decade, at least she'll fill another important spot in music history. Flip through our Lady Gaga slideshow, and hit the blue links for more.
