Chaykin passed away at a Toronto hospital after struggling with kidney problems, said producer Mark McKinney, who worked with the actor on his most-recent series, the Canadian sitcom Less Than Kind.
"He was one of our greatest actors," McKinney said. "Maury's an actor of unparalleled gifts. You cannot learn what he had in spades."
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Chaykin moved to Canada as a young man to pursue a career in film. From there he would begin a nearly 40-year career in film and television, appearing most notably as a ruthless Army seargent in Dances with Wolves, a slack-jawed witness opposite Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny and dozens of other character roles.

In 1994 he won a Genie Award for his portrayal of a fallen rockstar who tries to get back up, a role based on Beach Boy Brian Wilson.
More recently, Chaykin had a recurring role on the hit HBO comedy Entourage. He played the irascible music producer Harvey Weingard, a caricature of famed producer Harvey Weinstein.
Chaykin leaves behind a wife, Anne of Avonlea actress Susannah Hoffman, and a daughter named Rose.
