Everyone Loves the Fray, Even Kanye West Fans
Never Say Never
When you think of the Fray, Kanye West, and indie hipsters you think of very different types of music. And very different fan groups. Well you might be wrong; it looks like even Kanye fans and indie hipsters are digging the Fray.
I'd say you know you've made it as a band when you're well liked by the mainstream pop lovers, as well as by Kanye West fans and indie hipsters. Can you get any more diverse than that? It seems that the Fray have hit it spot on with all different kinds of music fans.
Just for fun, the Fray covered Kanye West's "Heartless" on BBC radio and before long the track was an Internet sensation. Kanye fans were listening like crazy and the track even ended up on Kanye's blog. Joe King, guitarist and songwriter for the Fray says, "It's crazy. We didn't intend it to do what it's doing. We just did it one time, and then two days later, our manager e-mails and is like, 'By the way, "Heartless" is all over the Web. It's on Kanye's Web site, it's on hip-hop blogs, everybody's talking about it.'"
But indie hipsters also love the Fray. King says that while they were recording "Never Say Never," an indie hipster who works for them happened to hear it and really seemed to enjoy it. "He was like 'Dude, that song is special.' And I was like, 'Wait a minute, you're an indie hipster, and you're saying that?!' So I knew at that point, we had something."
And they definitely do have something. They're already busy at work on their third album and King says, "For the third record, it's exciting to think about different elements and completely different sides of the Fray that people haven't seen yet. We want to explore that part of us."
Different sides? Who's going to fall in love with the Fray next? Hardcore rappers? Country music lovers? Classical pianists? We can't wait to see.
