Exclusive Alicia Silverstone: Grow Younger, Leaner, Kinder To The Earth
Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet will make you nicer to your body and the planet.
With the holidays approaching, do you feel it's inevitable that your good eating habits will be derailed? Alicia Silverstone may have the answer for helping you stay on a healthy track -- and quite frankly, her advice could change your life.
In her amazing new book The Kind Diet, Silverstone asks you to consider that in the 1600s, the word diet was introduced to the English language with the following definition: "a way of living, or thinking, a day's journey." Silverstone calls the idea "So simple! So sane! How did this cute little word become synonymous with deprivation, suffering, and--let's be honest--total hell?"
Silverstone is as notorious for her strict vegan lifestyle as she is for her onscreen talent. She wrote The Kind Diet for readers with all different attitudes toward meat-eating. The word "kind" addresses how Silverstone believes more of us should be treating both our bodies and the earth -- and she makes it possible with three different approaches to a plant-based diet. There's a plan for those who just want to "flirt" with the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, for those who definitely want try going vegan, and for those who aim to be hard-core vegan "superheroes." Anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to experience a vegan or vegetarian diet can find a comfortable introduction to the lifestyle.
And coming from your carniverous celebrity editor who once moved to Italy just for the ham and cheese there (and, okay, the men) experimenting with the author's ideas yields inspiring results: the revelations Alicia Silverstone sets forth in this book about what meat consumption does to our bodies and our planet will transform the way you think about food. After I read the first chapter, I made a new decision about my "diet," and I've now been vegetarian for one whole week!
We had the chance to ask Alicia Silverstone a couple questions about going vegan and The Kind Diet. Here's what she had to say:
LimeLife: Alicia, how old were you when you went vegan?
Alicia Silverstone: I went full-on vegan at 21 when I realized that food has the power to heal and nourish the body (and soul) in a truly incredible way.
.
LimeLife: Awesome. And what's the biggest change you felt in your body when you first made the conversion?
Alicia Silverstone: Eating "kind" has literally made me feel like I'm getting younger, more powerful and more beautiful as I age simply because of what I eat.
LimeLife: Such as how?
Alicia Silverstone: I've seen improvement in everything from my skin and nails to my internal health -- I don't need to make as many doctors visits or take any medications! Also, I got leaner without even trying!
We love The Kind Diet! Natalie Portman is another big veggie star...although her approach is perhaps not quite as warm.
