Eye Infection Forces Bob Costas To Relinquish Sochi Olympic Games To Matt Lauer
Lauer: Vodka Shots All Around
This is not the kind of red eye Bob Costas is used to catching. The veteran TV announcer and MC of the winter Olympic Games in Sochi is stepping aside to give his worsening eye infection a chance to calm down.
Costas has been battling an eye infection since the games started last week. Viewers got a rare view of him in glasses -- as at first tried to keep the ailment at bay with medicated eyedrops -- but now the infection has gotten worse.
After appearing on air yesterday with not one but TWO red, puffy eyes, Costas says it's time to step aside until things get better. He will take the night off Tuesday while Today host Matt Lauer fills in.
"Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we're going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but you're Mariano Rivera, at least tonight,'' Costas said by phone in an interview with Lauer live on TODAY Tuesday.
Costas has been the butt of jokes on social media, with people comparing him to everything from the Terminator to the evil red-eyed ghoul from The Ghostbusters.
But don't feel to bad for him. While Lauer has to struggle with pronouncing weird Russian names all evening, Costas can finally get out and enjoy Sochi.
Here's to hoping a little vodka helps clear things up for him.
