More Gadgets Means More Distractions ... Even In Traffic

When you go for a morning run, do you blast Huey Lewis loud enough to drown out everything around you? If so, you might want to think about this: fatalities and major injuries to people wearing headphones has skyrocketed in the past decade.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine found there were 116 traffic accidents involving pedestrians reported from 2004 - 2011, with 84 of them resulting in a death.

However, it's the increasing trend that has music-lover's and safety experts alike worried -- the number of cases during the periods 2004-2005 and 2010-2011 TRIPLED, from 16 to 47.

The study found that at least half of the victims were hit by trains, while the other half were struck by cars, buses, bicycles and trailers.

While the average age was 21 years old and approximately 68% of them were male, every one of the victims had something in common: they were all wearing headphones.

"You'd be hard-pressed not to look out the window and see people walking around with headphones," said Dr. Richard Lichenstein, the study's lead author. "People probably had it with growing up - not to the extent that we see now."

And with everyone sporting their own iPhone buds or snazzy Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, the chances of being distracted by music and unable to hear honking cars or whistling trains are at an all-time high.

And it could be even worse. The study's researchers believe their report is just "the tip of the iceberg," as a large portion of pedestrian traffic accidents go unreported.

Statistics are fun, aren't they? This study is ludicrous! If you take small numbers and use percentages, you can get some REALLY impressive facts. Let's compare a couple facts:: FACT: 3 TRIPLE the number 1! FACT: 116 is 0.03% of 440,400. That 2nd fact uses numbers from the study (116) and the CDC (440,400). The CDC says in 2008 there were 73,400 combined pedestrian deaths+injuries (D+J). Assuming that number remained steady over the 6 year period of the study, that would be 440,400 total pedestrian D+J. Therefore: 440,400 x 0.0003 = 132. That's 16 extra D+J due to rounding. But note all the zeros to the right of the decimal point! TRAINS: According to the Federal Railroad Administration there were 214 pedestrians killed and 298 injured while trespassing on train tracks in 2011. This headphone study says there were 47 headphone-related deaths in 2011, and 55% struck by trains. Well, that accounts for 24 out of 214 - leaving 190 people who also didn't hear the diesel-electric locomotives coming! HORNS: 29% of the vehicles blew their horns "yet the pedestrians were still struck." Fabulous statistic. How long before the pedestrian was stuck did they blow their horn? Not in feet, but seconds? It takes 2 seconds to begin reacting - I don't see anything I'd hang my hat on in this statistic. This is nothing more than a couple of researchers looking for a politically-safe cause that politicians can champion in the name of "Save The Humans!" I suggest we ignore useless research and let nature take it's course.
