Gramps Says He Saw Nothing Wrong With Tattooing the Kid

Florida grandpa Jerry Garrison says he thinks he recently lost custody of his grandchildren because he let his 10-year-old grandson have exactly what he wanted: a tattoo on his leg.

Garrison says it's a tradition that every member of the Garrison family has his or her initials tattooed on their body. So when his grandson -- a 10-year-old boy -- asked to be included in the tradition, Garrison said he saw nothing wrong with it and gave the boy the tattoo on his leg.

But when the Florida Department of Children and Families visited the Garrison home -- on an unrelated matter -- they saw the 10-year-old's tattoo and informed the ink-happy grampy that there was something wrong with it.

The boy and the other children in Garrison's care -- it's unclear, according to an NBC news report, how many children lived there -- were put into foster homes, and Garrison assumes the tattoo is the main reason he lost the kids.

Not so, says a DCF spokesman.

"When you get into cases like this, is the child being abused? Is the child at risk? Are the actions of the parents putting the child at risk," DCF spokesman John Harrell said.

Meanwhile, a teary Garrison told a reporter, "I ain't never been in pain like this, it's the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. In my whole entire life."

Take Our Poll

Is tattooing a 10-year-old reason enough to remove children from the care of their grandfather?

  1. Duh, yes. I get that it's a family tradition, but who tattoos a child?!
  2. No. I don't agree with tattooing a kid, but if that's the only reason the kids were removed from their home, that seems extreme.
