Guinness Really Is Good for You
Guinness Health Benefits Explored in New Study
Drinking some Guinness might be a pasttime for beer lovers, but it sounds like the new study will get us tasting, too. The old advertising campaign slogan stating "Guinness is good for you" wasn't far off, and a pint a day might help ward off blood clots.
Guinness drinking just might deliver the same effects as taking a low-dose aspirin, which can cut the blood's ability to form clots. A Wisconsin team tested out the beer with dogs who had narrowed arteries similar to those with heart disease, finding that those who were given Guinness experienced reduced blood clotting, but those who were given lager did not benefit from the same effects.
The researchers presented their findings in Florida and stated that the "antioxidant compounds" in Guinness were responsible for the health benefits. They said that the most benefit they saw was from 24 fluid ounces of Guinness sipped at mealtimes.
A spokesperson from Brewery Research International said that they'd like to "see this research repeated." Who would've thought that the old Guinness campaign might not have been so far off?
