Happy Valentine's Day: Here's a Cockroach Named After You
For $10, the Bronx Zoo Gives You the Chance to Give Your Valentine Something That Will Last Forever (Maybe Even During a Nuclear Explosion)
Flowers, candy, candles, jewelry … they're all so been there, done that when it comes to Valentine's Day gifts.
But the Bronx Zoo is offering V-Day celebrants the chance to gift their loved ones with what may be one of the creepiest, yet coolest and definitely most unusual, Valentine's Day gifts ever: a cockroach.

To be exact, you're not actually buying a cockroach, but rather the chance to name one after the gift recipient. The Bronx Zoo is home to 58,000 Madagascar hissing roaches, and for a mere ten-spot, you can slap a moniker on one of them and present a certificate saying you've done just that to a "loyal partner, favorite boss or bug-loving kid," as the Zoo suggests.
"Flowers wilt. Candlelight fades. Roaches are forever," the Zoo adds, along with the promise that your quirky gift will help support the Wildlife Conservation Society and its five parks in New York City.
And for an extra $15, you can add a Cocoa Roach to the gift. The giant, dark chocolate treats (no real bug … it's 100% chocolate) are the handiwork of NYC chocolatier Sabrina Berkowitz, who hand paints the little buggers to look just like the cockroaches being named for Valentine's Day.
