HollyNotes: Oprah Winfrey, New Moon, Johnny Depp, Miley Cyrus, and Avril Lavigne
Oprah and Johnny Rock the Nation
Two monumental and earth-shattering announcements were made this week. First, Oprah revealed she'd be discontinuing her talk show in September 2011.
This proclamation resulted in every news site and celebrity blog tweeting, facebooking, and blogging about the end of the talk show world as we know it. I might be in the minority here, but I kinda don't care. I'm an Ellen girl. But I will admit, as far as big celebrity announcements go, this is a biggie. Her final show, airing September 9, 2011, will mark the end of her show's 25th season on the air. And per Oprah's site, it's been the highest ranked talk show for 23 consecutive seasons with an estimated 42 million viewers a week from 145 countries.
This announcement could be good news for other talk show hosts though- less people watching Oprah means more people watching Ellen, Bonnie Hunt, and even Wendy Williams (though that would be shocking.) Winfrey leaves quite a legacy behind, one that will be tough to match.
The second big announcement of the week was the unveiling of Johnny Depp as People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. Now, I don't know about you, but I think he's crazy hot. I even think his character Captain Jack Sparrow is gorgeous. So I was very pleased with the magazine's choice of top dog for the year.
Some were expecting Twilight hottie Robert Pattison to top the list, but the Pirates of the Caribbean actor nabbed the #1 spot. This is Depp's second time to win the crown and joins Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Richard Gere as men who've nabbed the title twice.

A Hollywood Minute
- Monday night was the New Moon premiere at the Mann Village Theater in Hollywood. Some reports claim fans camped out all weekend long to catch a glimpse of their favorite vampire or werewolf on the red carpet. It was a huge premiere with hundreds of people and tons of reporters and photographers. This type of hype only comes every so often. It's interesting to watch and fun to guess how long it will last (another year, tops.)
- Dawson's Creek actor James Van Der Beek filed for divorce this week. He and his wife, Heather Ann McComb, separated earlier this year. They got married 6 years ago in Malibu. I'm always sad when celebrity couples call it quits, particularly ones that include actors who starred in fabulously-silly teen dramas on the CW. (Although I'll admit I was only kinda sad when Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray divorced.)

- In celebrity dating news, Avril Lavigne and That ‘70s Show Star Wilmer Valderrama were spotted sitting extra close last Saturday night at Hollywood hotspot Wonderland. They also dined together at Nobu recently. I like both of these people so I'd be pleased with this pairing, but it just feels a little odd. I need a second to let it sink in, I think.
- The web was all abuzz this week talking about Demi Moore's photoshopped W magazine cover. Have you seen it? It's absolutely insane. First of all, it's unbelievable that this obvious of an error (her entire left thigh is just MIA) made it through editorial reviews repeatedly and actually landed on newsstands. Second, I feel bad for Demi Moore. She had nothing to do with it-and she looks fantastic otherwise. What a bummer all around.
- Turns out Miley Cyrus doesn't much care for the Twilight movies. She made it abundantly clear during a radio interview earlier this week that she's never seen Twilight-nor will she ever. She doesn't like vampires or werewolves and just isn't going to partake. I give her kudos for being open about not loving the movie in the midst of all this crazy Twilight mania. As someone who also isn't obsessed with these movies, I appreciate her honestly. And frankly, I'm just glad we're not watching her pole dance anymore.
- One day Nicole Richie was tweeting about a cold she couldn't kick and the next day, she's in the hospital getting treated for pneumonia. Thankfully, her publicist reports that she's doing well. I'm sending lots of happy thoughts her way!
