She Also Works as a Janitor at Her School to Make a Living … So, What Did You Do Today?

Yep, this is definitely one of those stories that a) puts your life into proper perspective, and b) motivates you to kick things up a notch in your own life: 18-year-old Dawn Loggins has just earned a full scholarship to Harvard, after years of being abandoned by her parents, neglected by her grandmother and bullied by her fellow students.

"When I was younger, I looked around at my family and I saw the neglect, the drug abuse, the bad choices and I saw my family living from paycheck to paycheck, and I just made a decision that I was not going to end up like my parents," the amazing teen told North Carolina TV station WBTV.

"When I lived with my grandma there was trash all over the house," she continued. "She never really explained to me that it was important to shower … it was important to take care of yourself. So I would go months at a time without showering. I would wear the same dress to school for months at a time."

That's when the bullying began, and when her unstable parents came back into the picture, Loggins' life did not improve. She says she went to three different junior highs and three different high schools, and, because the family didn't always have running water or electricity, she would often have to do her homework by candlelight.

When she entered her current school, as a 10th grader, she had to spend months catching up, but is now taking AP and honors classes, while at times working as a janitor at her school.

And her efforts so distinguished her from her fellow Harvard applicants -- 36,000 of them -- that she was offered a full scholarship to the prestigious school, where she wants to major in biology.

"I want to help with new discoveries," Loggins said.  "And I want to help make the world a better place."

We think she already has.
