Huge Engagement Rings Aren't Fashionable Anymore
News-flash Hilary Duff and Carrie Underwood!
We didn't think this day would ever come, but The New York Post is reporting that huge engagement rings just aren't fashionable anymore and lots of women are opting for simple wedding bands instead. Could the days of the huge wedding bling be gone or is this just a sign of the economic times?
According to the article, lots of New York ladies are turning down the big bling for many different reasons. And we all know that whatever the NYC ladies are doing, the rest of us are sure to follow suit. According to bridal blogger Claudia Copquin, "Why go around with a massive diamond on your hand? There's no need to make any kind of statement" and that's totally true and makes perfect sense. But that doesn't mean some of us don't want a little bling. You know, if our men can afford it and all.
But it is totally silly to break the bank for an engagement ring simply to flaunt it around. The editor-in-chief of Brides magazine puts it simply: "For most women, the engagement ring is the most important, most loved and often the most expensive piece of jewelry they own... That said, some women just have a more understated way of going through life, and a wedding band is enough for them." Because, you know, they probably want to spend the money on a house or their future kids' college educations or something.
Another expert, Stephanie Coontz, the author of Marriage, A History, thinks it may have something to do with women and their personal successes. She says, "Many women don't like people to make a fuss over the ring as if getting married was the biggest achievement of their lives."
Does this news change your idea of what you want in an engagement ring? While I believe more women are opting for simple wedding bands these days, I highly doubt the days of the huge engagement rings are going to completely disappear any time soon. Take a look at Hilary Duff and Carrie Underwood's fingers for proof.
