Ice Age 4 Turns Up The Heat On Spider-Man, Tops Box Office With $46 Million

He may be a superhero, but Spider-Man is still no match for a wild and wooly gang of prehistoric party animals. Ice Age 4: Continental Drift beat out the web-slinger at the box office this weekend with $46 million.

The fourth film in the hugely successful animated franchise made use of its star-packed voice cast -- including the likes of Dennis Leary, Ray Romano, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez and Queen Latifah -- to earn the top spot at the box office in its first weekend in theaters.
Second place belonged to Peter Parker, photojournalist by day and skyscraper-swinging superhero by night, in The Amazing Spider-Man. The film, which stars Andrew Garfield as Spidey and Emma Stone as his high school crush Gwen Stacy, earned $35 million, bringing its total to $200 million.
Ted, the raunchy buddy comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, placed third at the box office this weekend with $22.1 million. That brings the film's domestic total to a very respectable $158 million.

Rounding out the top five this weekend are Brave, Pixar's latest cinematic wonder about a young Scottish heroine, with $10.7 million, and Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey as oiled up strippers, with $9 million.
Opening next week: The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan's final entry in his massively popular Batman trilogy. Expect mayhem (and major money) at the cineplex.
