Irina Shabayeva Wins Project Runway
And the fan favorite finishes second.
New Yorker Irina Shabayeva wears the winner's pants in season six of Project Runway. The popular fashion design show announced the 27 year-old as the top finisher in last night's season finale, with judges describing her outfits as "sleek, modern and cohesive."
Irina Shabayeva, or "Mean-a Irina" as she became known because of her abrasive personality, beat out runnersup Althea Harper and Carol Hannah Whitfield in an episode filmed during February's fashion week in New York.
Each of the three contestants brought the heat in the final competition, designing their own 13-look runway shows. Shabayeva's winning threads were initially criticized for their drabness, but after consideration, judges Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and guest Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune praised her for the line's attention to detail.
As the winner, Shabayeva gets a sweet paycheck of $100,000 to start her own fashion line, plus a trip to Paris and an editorial spread in Marie Claire magazine.
Of course, the young lady thanked everyone in her trademark cocky style. "I can't believe it! I'm definitely proud of myself," she said. "I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I did have some stiff competition."
