Janet Jackson Slammed By PETA, Pamela Anderson For Fur Ad

Janet Jackson responds with soft defense.

The luxury fur label Blackglama is featuring Janet Jackson as part of a huge new marketing push to get women of all ages to splash out on fur. Janet Jackson's being bashed as a result, but the one-time animal activist seems to suggest that she's part of the campaign for her career.

Janet Jackson appears smiling and wrapped up in a silky Blackglama mink fur coat as part of the company's "What Becomes a Legend Most" campaign. PETA insiders are furious, with PETA president Dan Mathews writing Janet Jackson an open letter that reads:

"You and I spoke at length about the fur issue. You told me that you were always aggravated at photo shoots when stylists would try to throw fur on you and that you were even wary of wearing fake fur out of concern that it might actually be real or look real in photos and send the wrong message. You were very straightforward and sensible about it. What happened?"

Anti-fur activist Pamela Anderson agrees with Mathews and has voiced her letdown over Janet Jackson's fur foul: "It's disappointing," Anderson said. "[Janet Jackson] has spoken out against fur before. I don't know why some people stop listening to their heart. I guess some people get greedy, but it's sad."

And with Janet Jackson's pop-culture presence on the rise again, it doesn't seem as though she's doing the fur ad for cash -- People reports, "Jackson joins a host of Hollywood legends who have appeared in the black-and-white ad campaign including: Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne and Lauren Bacall. In a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot Jackson said, 'If someone would have told me later in life that I would be alongside such legendary entertainers, I would have never believed it.'"
