Mayer: "Coupling Is A Tricky Thing"

John Mayer has confirmed his split with Katy Perry, but he's not revealing much else. The singer says in a new interview on The Ellen Degeneres Show that his relationship was private while it was on, and it will be private now that it's done.

In an interview airing Tuesday, the notorious playboy tells Ellen what many of his fans were suspecting: he and Katy Perry have officially ended things.

"Correct. Listen, it was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during, and it's a private relationship, still," he said.

Mayer, who in the past has been romantically linked to starlets like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift, explained to Ellen that he may have finally learned how to have an adult relationship.

"I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," he said. "I've been much happier since then. I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing. It's a tricky thing. I want everyone to be happy."

Mayer also talked about his throat condition, granuloma, which caused him vocal problems in the second half of 2011. The singer says he overworked his voice and drank too much booze.

"It didn't help that I really loved, love, love scotch," he said. "It's just like applying poison to your body. It's like applying a shellac of poison. It's just delicious, wonderful poison that makes you not care how late you're out 'til or where you're going. I had to really say, 'I like singing and writing more than I like delicious scotch.' So I had to really dial it down. And I'm a little more boring now."
