JonBenet Ramsey Would Have Turned 22 This Week [VIDEO]

And We Still Don't Know Who Killed the Colorado Kiddie Beauty Pageant Queen

Remember in 1996, when the murder of kiddie beauty pageant queen JonBenet Ramsey became a national story, how the notion of dressing up little kids in very adult makeup and outfits was a practice most of us were blissfully unaware of?

Sadly, kiddie pageants are now a regular part of our pop culture -- in no small part because of the TV show Toddlers & Tiaras -- but even sadder: this week marks what would have been JonBenet's 22nd birthday.

And sadder still: her killer has never been caught.

Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her parents' Boulder, Colorado home the day after Christmas in 1996, a few months after she had celebrated her sixth birthday on Aug. 6.

The story became a national obsession, with parents Patsy and John Ramsey and the whole family considered prime suspects at various points in the investigation. DNA evidence found on JonBenet's underwear eventually cleared the parents, but in another tragic twist in the case, Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006, before her name had been cleared.

John Ramsey, who remarried in 2011, wrote a book earlier this year, The Other Side of Suffering, in which he talked about the ongoing murder investigation, his family's grief and the media coverage of JonBenet's death.

Jezebel.com reports he also gave an interview to ABC News, during which he called child beauty pageants "unhealthy," and said JonBenet's participation in them "might have drawn attention to us … advice to a parent is just recognize that, regardless of where you live, there could be evil around you."

In yet another twist in the case, teacher John Mark Karr was briefly jailed in 2006 after saying he had been "with JonBenet when she died" and that "her death was an accident," but evidence couldn't link him to the crime, and he was cleared.

John Ramsey's most recent statement on his daughter's unsolved murder: "I don't know for sure what happened, and I don't want to know, really."
