Kate Moss's Skinny Quote Backfires
Kate Moss Blamed for Talking Skinny
Kate Moss probably knew how controversial she was getting when she told WWD that "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Do you think that her commentary was out of line, or should she be able to say what she feels about weight loss, regardless of the repercussions?
Quotes similar to Kate Moss's commentary are often seen on pro-anorexia websites, said protesters, who stated that her words were unwarranted and irresponsible. Since she has a seven-year-old daughter, other media sources and outraged individuals were using that as another reason why Kate should have kept quiet.
A psychologist who specializes in treating eating disorders told the Sydney Morning Herald that "The term is used in anorexia websites to reinforce to themselves and each other to pursue thinness."
"I think it could have quite a large impact having someone so famous saying that," she continued. "She is just giving credence to a belief that we are trying to move away from. If they're at the cusp and feeling vulnerable, that might send them back into the pursuit of thinness."
I think of it more as a poor choice of words and role-model irresponsibility. Stick "healthy" in the saying instead of "skinny," and you've got yourself a winner when you're about to inhale a second bag of microwave popcorn, or a pile of butter-drenched mashed potatoes.
Model Katie Green told the tabs that "If you read any of the pro-anorexia websites they go crazy for quotes like these." Do you agree? Should Kate Moss have kept quiet?
