Have You Ever Done a Drastic Hair Color Change?

Katherine Heigl hit the red carpet last night with a sophisticated dark color instead of her usual blonde. What do you think of her Ugly Truth look-- yea or nay? The actress might just pull it off, thanks to her dark eyes and rosy complexion.

I'm not much into hair coloring myself, but thanks to a hair color scientist of a sister, I've seen it all. From personal experience with patches, streaks, brassiness, and more, here's what you should do when you decide to dye.

*Do add highlights/lowlights to add depth to your hair. Am I the only one who thinks Katherine's is looking a little flat?

*Keep in mind that some color fades faster and requires more touch-ups (which equals more money). Red is notorious for fading and showing roots.

*If you can't handle the stress of a blonde-to-brunette level switcharoo, why not just go up or down two shades to test it out?

*Research before you commit. Take a look at your stylist's portfolio, find out their specialties, and ask their opinion on your hair goals.
