Getting Hammered In School One Boozy Bear At A Time

by Emma Jones

Kids can be innovative little creatures. Especially when it comes to sneaking booze into school. We first heard of them soaking tampons in alcohol to get drunk (gross), but their latest scheme involves a more appetizing treat: gummy bears.

According to the Daily Mail, the latest trend to hit the school yard is gummy bears soaked in vodka or rum. Yeah, you've got it, rummy bears. Anderson Cooper shed the light on them when his guest, teen expert Chelsea Krost, displayed a bowl of the tasty treats on his talk show.

"Kids are bringing these to school, kids are bringing these in their backpack, kids are doing this in class and they are just saying to their teacher I am just eating a gummy," she says.

The drunk bears are easy to mistake for the innocent variety and are made by soaking gummy bears in the spirit of choice for three to five days. They absorb the liquid, double in size and change to a firm jell-o consistency.

But while Krost says the recipe is a "creative and smart way to sneak vodka," she underlines its negative impact: "It's dangerous because you don't know how much vodka you are in ingesting per gummy."

Another expert agreed, saying the habit "is particularly dangerous for children especially. I mean you talk about acute alcohol poisoning - here you have absolutely no control of how much you are getting, how much you are absorbing, how fast you are absorbing."

The only time I've been truly *$%-faced was when I unwittingly ate a whole bowl of these.
