Lady Gaga Beats Britney Spears as Most Popular Twitter User

Britney Spears is officially no longer the princess of pop. This according to Twitter, which saw Lady Gaga's rise in tweeties (Twitter slang for "sweeties"; a.k.a. fans) last week when the world heard that she and Spears were neck-and-neck. Here are their current numbers...Britney, do you feel threatened?
At press time, Britney Spears had 5,709,358 followers on Twitter, while Gaga pulled ahead from being tens of thousands of followers behind Britney. Gaga's current count? This: 5,743,318.
It's big-time, and it's clearly an indication of Lady Gaga's worldwide popularity. Just how did she do it? She campaigned with a Lady Gaga Twitter hash called "GagaTwitterQueen," posting photos to the page. Plus Gaga fans were tweeting to high heaven to support the campaign -- one tweeted Monday morning, "#GagaTwitterQueen #Followme #ifollowback #monsterfollowback #teamfollowback #gagaforlife #monsterfamily #monsterlove #littlemonster #retweet." And you thought your crazy Gautlier-inspired bras gave you support, Gaga!

On August 20 Lady Gaga announced via Twitter, "Lady Gaga is the most followed person on 08.20.2010!" So, yes, it's official, and it's big news to kick off the week...although Gaga may not want to get too comfy on her Twitter throne just yet because Justin Bieber is receiving nearly 2,700 new followers every day -- experts suggest he'll catch up to Gaga in the coming weeks.
