Letterman Extortionist Busted Cashing Fake $2 Million
Child support worries led to Joe Halderman's desperation before he was caught Thursday morning.
Joe Halderman met David Letterman's lawyer Thursday morning to accept a check from Letterman that the parties had discussed over the past week. Unfortunately for Halderman, Letterman's lawyer wore a wire.
Halderman and Letterman's lawyers reportedly conducted a transaction on Wednesday involving a fake check for $2 million. When Halderman hit the bank to cash it Thursday morning, he was arrested.
What was his motive in getting the money? Early speculations suggested that Halderman was getting revenge on Letterman for the affair he had with Halderman's girlfriend Stephanie Birkitt. Now, however, sources claim that Halderman needed the money for child support, which he pays his ex-wife approximately $6,000 per month.
