More reason to shop at Macy's

It's always a good sign when you see major department stores jumping on the eco-friendly train and making small changes that can make a big difference. Macy's is getting set to make some awesome green changes... Including one that involves replacing all their hangers!

When you're wondering through Macy's, the hangers holding the clothes are probably the last thing you're thinking about. But did you know that Macy's uses about 3 million hangers every year? That's a crazy number! So, now they're switching to a more environmentally-friendly hanger.

According to a new press release, starting this fall, Macy's will use "environmentally friendly matte black hangers for most apparel merchandise sold in its stores, replacing clear hangers that have been the industry standard for several decades." So, now you might actually start noticing the hangers used in Macy's stores.

It may sound like a small change, but it will likely have a huge impact. The new hangers will be made with recycled plastic materials, instead of the petroleum-based resins that are used to make clear hangers.

In addition, Macy's has launched the second phase of its program to install energy-saving LED light bulbs in stores nationwide. They'll be installing 280,000 LED bulbs, in addition to the 130,000 bulbs installed in 2010. They'll also be eliminating the use of all foam packaging, increasing the number of solar power systems, using self-serve electric vehicles, and working on rewards programs for customers who participate in eco-friendly practices.
