Meryl Streep, Nora Ephron Bring Julia Child to Life
Who's hungry?
Like any good recipe, a film must have the right balance of ingredients if it wants to have a result that moves both the palette and the heart. Thankfully, Julie and Julia, the new movie that follows the rise of culinary sensation Julia Child, has extra helpings of talent: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Nora Ephron.
The film is an adaptation of a memoir written by Julie Powell, a New York blogger who completed every recipe, in order, of Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
In the film, this quest is set alongside Julia Child herself, as the young chef discovers her calling in post war Europe.
Nora Ephron, who has previously directed films like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry met Sally, found the story right up her alley.
"I'm obsessed with food," she said. "I'm the kind of person who will drive three hours for a bowl of chili."
As for the actors, buzz has already been growing around Meryl Streep's performance.
"We did this table read," says Chris Messina, who plays Julie Powell's husband. "And she came the first day with the wig and these high heels that make her taller. She had the accent, the voice, and she was Julia from the first day."
Co-star Amy Adams echoed the sentiment. "She was able to bring the essence of Julia," she said, "the voice of Julia, without ever feeling like it was an impersonation."
But for Streep, her performance went further than just an impersonation. "I was doing an idealized version of [Julia] and my mother," she said. "My mother had a similar joie de vivre. I wanted to be more like my mother. This is my homage to her."
