Oprah Winfrey: Racist Swiss Store Denied Me A Handbag
Oprah Could Have The Woman Killed If She Wanted
They obviously don't watch the Oprah Winfrey show in Switzerland. The media maven is crying foul after a shopkeeper in Zurich reportedly denied her access to a pricey handbag because of the color of her skin.
Oprah says she received quite a shock when she decided to do a little shopping in Switzerland last month, where she was on holiday for friend Tina Turner's wedding.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Oprah tells of how she visited a boutique shop in the country's largest city ... only to have an employee refuse to let her see one of the handbags.
"No, it's too expensive," the woman told her of the $40,000 purse.
Oprah recounted, "One more time, I tried. I said, 'But I really do just want to see that one,' and the shopkeeper said, 'Oh, I don't want to hurt your feelings,' and I said, 'Okay, thank you so much. You're probably right, I can't afford it.' And I walked out of the store."
According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey made $77 million last year, so the bag is not too expensive for her. But the price is not what really irked the talk show host. It's that the saleswoman apparently denied her because she's black.
"I could've had the whole blow-up thing and thrown down the black card, but why do that? But that clearly is, you know ... it (racism) still exists. Of course it does," Oprah said.
The owner of the store has since apologized for the employee, saying there was obviously a "misunderstanding between her and Oprah." The Swiss government also issued a formal apology.
As for the bag Oprah wanted? It's since been sold.
