Pink, Lil Wayne, Kanye and Others Re-record 'We Are the World' For Haiti
Stars sing for Haiti.
Two and a half decades ago, 40 of the biggest stars in the music world - including Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross - got together to record a song that would raise money for humanitarian aid in Africa. Now, a whole new generation of superstars is ready to re-record the hit to help out Haiti.
Famed music producer Quincy Jones and singer Lionel Ritchie (who penned the original song with Michael Jackson in 1985) announced last week that "We Are the World" will be recorded again to benefit Haiti.
And this time, there will be an updated hip-hop and pop twist. The song will reportedly feature the likes of Pink, Natalie Cole, Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Wyclef Jean, and even Lil Wayne.
The music video for the song, officially titled "We Are the World — 25 for Haiti," will be shot in 3D by Crash director Paul Haggis.
After its release in March of 1985, the original tune went on to be one of the most celebrated charity songs of all time. It was the first single to ever be certified multi-platinum, and would go on to raise over $60 million for relief aid here in the U.S. and in Africa.
Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, hoardes of other celebrities joined in on the collaboration. Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Willie Nelson, Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder can all be heard on the track.
