She Only Found Out About the Baby When She Ran Into Her Son's Babymama

If you're surprised to find out Real Housewives of Atlanta and Glee star NeNe Leakes is a new grandma, imagine how surprised she was to find out … by accidentally running into the then-pregnant girlfriend of her son Bryson.

Leakes is now a very proud first-time grandma to two-month-old Bri'asia, but she was not thrilled when, or how, she found out about the baby girl's impending arrival, she tells In Touch magazine (via the U.K. Daily Mail Online).

"I only found out about everything because I ran into Ashley when she was more than six months along," Leakes says. "I said, 'You look pregnant.' And she said, 'Hasn’t Bryson told you?' But he hadn’t because he knew that I wouldn’t approve of him having a child so young. I didn’t feel like he was ready for such a big responsibility.

"I was his age when I had him, so I know how tough it is. I didn’t want him to make the same mistakes that I did," Leakes continues. "I needed to let it sink in."

Leakes, who has a younger son, Brentt, with husband Gregg, says she always wanted a female child.

"And now I have one! She's just adorable," she says of the baby, who is already a fashionable girl, thanks to gifties like Gucci shoes, dresses and sparkly headbands, all courtesy of her granny.

"I paid for everything in the nursery: the clothing, the diapers. I don't want her to feel strapped."

As for being called grandma, Leakes, 44, also says she's learned to embrace the title.

"Forty is the new 30," she says. "I'm a sassy, fashion-forward grandma!"

And speaking of Gregg, who NeNe planned to divorce two years ago, the current status of their divorce and relationship is up in the air. The two were recently spotted vacationing together in Miami, prompting speculation that they may be reunited.

Leakes, who has parlayed her reality TV gigs into roles on scripted TV, is a cast member of NBC's new sitcom The New Normal, created by Glee series creator Ryan Murphy.
