Saint Patrick's Day 2010: Party Till You're Green
Pinching should be outlawed.
Saint Patrick's Day is here, and that means everyone who has even the slightest bit of Irish blood in them will be decked out in green and ready to party. Well, here's a wee bit of facts about the holiday you can use to impress your friends, Irish or not.
As the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to the Emerald Isle sometime in the 400s. Myth says that Patty drove out all the snakes from Ireland, but most historians think this is just symbolic of his banishment of Paganism.
Though the color green is virtually synonymous with Ireland, the country's original official color was blue. The Irish national flower, the shamrock, became famous after Patrick reportedly used it to teach people about The Holy Trinity (The Father, Son and Holy Ghost).
Nowadays, Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated both in the church and out, as many people see as a day to honor all things Irish (not just Saint Patrick).
And that means lots of Jameson whisky, lots of green beer and lots of leprechauns, pots o' gold and jigs in the street.
Parades and parties are held in Ireland and all over the world, especially where large Irish populations have immigrated (like Great Britain, Canada, Australia and the U.S.). They even dye the river green in Chicago.
So run along now and have some Irish fun. Be safe, party hardy, and do a little jig for your pals at Limelife.
