He must have really wanted out
Tonight is the big night...the moment of truth! Can American Idol survive without Simon Cowell? We'll find out when season 10 of American Idol airs on FOX tonight. When it was announced that Simon Cowell wouldn't be returning for the new season of American Idol, I wasn't surprised. I knew he wanted to bring his British show, The X Factor, to America. But it turns out, he could have brought X Factor to the states and remained on as a judge of American Idol. And raked in $130M doing so.
According to The Daily Beast, "In the summer of 2009, with one more year left on Cowell's contract, Fox-represented by Rupert Murdoch himself-offered Cowell a staggering deal: to continue his services on Idol as well as to bring X Factor to America, Cowell would be paid in the neighborhood of $130 million a year." And I have a feeling he totally could have negotiated that offer up a bit if he wanted to..
But Simon Cowell turned the offer down. Do you think he realized he'd have no free time in his life if he tried to pull off both shows? Or maybe his fiancee, Mezhgan Hussainy stopped him from doing it. Or more likely, Cowell just realized his time on American Idol was over and he needed to move on.

While I'm excited to see how Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez do as judges on American Idol tonight, I know I'm going to be missing Simon Cowell like crazy. The show just won't feel right without him, no matter how good the new judges are. One thing is for sure--American Idol producers are saving tons of money by not having to pay Cowell. Hopefully they're putting it to good use.
Will you be tuning in to a Simon Cowell-less American Idol tonight?
