The Drinking Age Debate Heats Up
What do you think about the drink?
We can vote when we're 18, join the military when we're 18, buy cigarettes and porn when we're 18, but we can't drink. Not legally, anyway.
In recent weeks there's been a lot of back and forth by a lot of big wigs about the legal drinking age. The 1984 law that helped move the drinking age to 21 is up for renewal next year, and people on both sides of the issue are making their case.
In one corner is a coalition of presidents from over 100 colleges and universities who are backing the Amethyst Initiative. They believe--after seeing rampant binge drinking on campuses--that lowering the legal drinking age will lead young people to drink more responsibly.
One of their suggestions is to allow people over 18 to buy alcohol after they've taken part in alcohol education courses.
In the other corner are those that argue that raising the legal drinking age has saved lives, and with very few (if any) negative consequences. The percentage of high school seniors who drink monthly fell by almost 30 percent in the last ten years, as did fatal car crashes involving young adults who had been drinking.
We wanted to know where you come down on the drinking age issue?
Should the legal drinking age be lowered?
