The Olsen Twins Collaborating with Toms Shoes
Not charitable enough?
It sounds like an unlikely collaboration. But at the same time, it makes perfect sense. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are teaming up with Toms Shoes to design a pair of shoes for a good cause. So, why are people taking issue with it?
If you know Toms Shoes then you know that every time you buy a pair, a pair is made for a child who lives somewhere where shoes aren't readily available. So, I applaud Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, of The Row, for designing their own pair of shoes for Toms. But some people aren't so happy. Why not?
Well, a typical pair of Toms shoes costs $40-$50. A pair of shoes from The Row for Toms? Those will run you between $98 and $150. But Toms will still only be donating one pair of shoes per each of these sold. And people are pretty angry about it. But I say, don't be! After all, that's one more pair than would be donated from the Olsen's regular Row line.
.
Toms' founder, Blake Mycoskie, is trying to tell get people to see this, too. He tells WWD.com, "We recognize that it's a luxury to be able to give, and everyone at Toms takes this to heart... The feeling we get from being able to give new pairs of shoes to children in need is extraordinary, and with The Row, we've found a partner whose amazing interpretation of our classic alpargata has truly taken our product to an entirely new level."
Right? I don't get why people are so offended by this. Yes, it would be better if Toms would donate two pairs of shoes per pair of Row shoes sold. But I also recognize Toms is also a business and I think they're already doing a fabulous job giving back to the world, in the form of shoes! If you want to buy Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's shoes for Toms and give a child a free pair of shoes, go for it! If not, then don't. I, for one, can't wait to see what the Olsen twins' Toms shoes look like!
